1885: Transgender Person Discovered After Death

The Coshocton Democrat, Page 3; May 5, 1865. (Coshocton, Ohio)

A MALE-WOMAN. — A strange sort of person named Sophia Gibons, died a few days ago [in] Cambridge out in Guernsey County Ohio. It was always supposed that the person in question was a female and for [twenty-five] years the public remained in ignorance of the fact that the would-be woman was in reality a man. Not [until] after death was the deception discovered. During all that time the man dressed as a woman associated with women, and had been employed as such in doing all sorts of rough house-work, from place to place.
